SCM 4.5 KEEPS SAFETY IN MIND
By Sue Still, RN

Patient safety continues to be on the fore front of Eclipsys’ new release. Version 4.5 of Sunrise Clinical Manager offers the end user many easy to implement safety features.

The standard header continues to be unchangeable however they have added the patients birth date next to the age and allowed for more display space in header one. Along with this enhancement they have added 2 additional header lines. Your organization has the ability to configure these two lines based on their practice habits. Many different types of information can be shown in these 2 new lines such as allergies, comments, health issues, results, observations from flow sheets and calculated values. Each organization can vary the view by user and application mode.

The end users’ choosing the incorrect patient has always been an issue and causes many errors. Eclipsys has provided us with the ability to help the end user with a new security right. This new right can give your organization the option to control at log that no patient will be selected on the list. The user will have to make a conscious effort to choose a patient the patient he/she will be working with.

Another enhancement to patient lists is alternating color lines. Each row on the patient list has an alternating background color. Eclipsys has set the default color as light blue however your organization can change the color through the environmental profile. In the 4.5 release the ability to have alternating color lines on the patient list is also controlled by a new security right.

The end user will also notice a new button located next to the list drop down “Select All Patients” The Select all Patients button allows the end user to now select all of the patients on his/her list with one click.

One feature that Eclipsys has removed with this release is the New Orders Button on the order review screen and replaced it with a multi layer filter. Now for some this greatly enhances the end users ability to filter for all types of orders in many ways. However for some it was nice to click on the new orders button and at a glance see what the new orders were with out having to go back to a column to view these.

Patient safety and ease of use continue to be the focus of Eclipsys. I touched on only a couple of safety enhancements with the release of 4.5. I encourage everyone to review the release guide as they plan to move to the 4.5 release of Sunrise Clinical Manager.

SO, YOU'VE BEEN PUT IN CHARGE OF TRAINING... NOW WHAT?
By Marilyn Cushing, RNC, MSN, MBA

You asked for it...You got it!

The system is built, and you have the awesome job of training everyone in the facility. While seemingly a daunting task, you can manage the process and meet the needs of your users with a thoughtful plan that won’t wear you down while executing it.
VCS 5 step program includes:

  • Identify the scope of your training program
  • Identify the content and length of each class.
  • Identify class schedules.
  • Identify class logistics.
  • Inform and obtain buy-in from management.

Solid planning helps everyone visualize the end goal. Adaptation and use of a new computer system is a measure of the project’s success, and appropriate training will provide the end -user with the tools needed to be successful.
