Cerner® CCL Reporting and the Vitalize Logic Library Case Study
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), consisting of 19 hospitals in western Pennsylvania, has
embarked on an electronic medical record project (eRecord) using the Cerner Millennium ® suite of
applications. A large part of the success of the two CPOE implementations is attributed to the physician
acceptance associated with the UPMC Rounding Report. Dr. Richard Ambrosino, Associate Medical Director,
eRecord Project, is a board certified Internist with a PhD in Medical Informatics from the University of
Pittsburgh.
Vitalize Consulting Solutions, Inc. worked closely with Dr. Ambrosino to co-develop and improve upon
Cerner® PowerChart® standard reports. Cerner’s Command Language (CCL) is a SQL based
programming language that allows the creation of custom queries, reports, and views from data stored in an
Oracle® database. Using CCL, two of the most successful UPMC reports include the Micro Genview and the
Physicians Rounding Report.
The Micro Genview and the Physicians Rounding Report received high marks from the staff utilizing the
system and reports. John Smaling, Principal at VCS spoke with Dr. Ambrosino about forming a co-development
partnership in order to couple UPMC’s clinical knowledge expertise with VCS’ CCL prowess.
A formal agreement was reached to co-develop and create a repository of reports from which other
customers might benefit. Our repository, an intuitive ASP.net application, called Vitalize Logic Library
(VLL), is accessible over the internet. The VLL service offering allows the user to review the library of
CCL reports, Rules. Etc. with no obligation to purchase.
With a log on and password, at your convenience, you can review descriptions, example outputs, pricing,
mark items for your internal approval process etc. without any sales interference. Since the content has
already been produced, and proven, VCS can offer the services to make subtle modifications, or re-create the
report in your environment far less expensively and more timely, than creating the content from scratch.
