TRAINING CONSIDERATIONS
By Kris Galeszewski

Technical Requirements:

  • Create User logons
  • Create Network logons
  • Printers: Build in the TRAIN domain and test
  • Faxes: Build in TRAIN domain for printing of prescriptions and test depending if RRD server is available for the domain.
  • Will a scanner be available to train users on scanning of results? Will there need to be a PC with a local install of the Cerner apps for scanning? If so, each fax machine will need to be tested prior to training.
  • Will the pc’s in the training center need to be built in WTS?
  • Medical Record Publishing: will there be a would need to purchase a chart sever for TRAIN domain
  • Redirect interfaces to the TRAIN domain for registrations, scheduled appointments, results
  • Is the training facility complete (i.e. sufficient number of working pcs, printers)?
  • Are all pcs loaded with the most current revision of software?
  • What level of technical support will be available during training?
  • In the unlikely event that the TRAIN domain is not available, what will be the back up plan for training?
  • Have all training pcs been tested to verify that the users can log on to the system?
  • Will users have access to TRAIN domain for practice purposes post training for remedial review of PCO?

Set up of patients in training domain:

  • Standardized Naming conventions for training patients
  • Determine the number of training patients to create.
  • Determine and build the appropriate data necessary for training.
  • Consider creating instructor patients that are populated with additional information.
  • Register train patients to various locations. This will help facilitate instructing users on the importance of selecting the correct patient encounter in the patient search window.

Administrative:

  • Have accurate training documentation and exercises been developed?
  • Have departmental Policy and Procedure guidelines been developed?
  • Develop a Skill assessment/Proficiency test
  • Develop Agenda
  • Is there a plan to train users who were unable to attend any of the training sessions?
  • Will help desk require training on PCO to facilitate issue resolution?
  • Have future state process flows accessible during training.

Pre training course work:

  • Windows training/Assessment
  • Will participants have access to CBT for PCO or other Cerner applications for practice?

Post Training Considerations:
Develop a plan for post conversion, on-going educational needs including replacement training, continuing education (with new software revisions), and ongoing system modifications

  • Plan for system modifications: typically I have seen sites designate one day each week to implement changes to the system. A Communication is then sent to the end-users notifying them of an impending change.
  • What is the plan for resetting of passwords? Help desk involvement?
