SYSTEM SLOW? OUT OF LICENSES? CHECK THIS HELPFUL HINT!
By Lois Wright, RN, BSN
How do I avoid having more than one session of Eclipsys open; and if I have more than one session open, how
do I know in which session I was working?
First, you should know that, depending on your facility’s settings, your Eclipsys session will be “suspended"
after a preset period of inactivity. When this happens, a new logon screen pops up automatically to allow
another user to log in. If you use the new logon screen to get back to Eclipsys, you will be occupying two
Eclipsys “licenses.” Your facility purchases a certain number of licenses and, when all licenses are being
used, no other users can access the system. Also, multiple open Eclipsys sessions use up server resources and
slow the system! Here’s how to determine whether you have a “suspended” session.
Note the traffic light in the lower left-hand corner of this screenshot. This indicates an active Eclipsys
session that has been placed in “suspension.” You should not open a new session by entering your logon ID and
password in the logon screen.

To restore the suspended session, you need only right-click on the suspended session and choose Restore.

Type in your password to “unsuspend” your session.

Now, let’s say you had been in an active Eclipsys session and switched over to Word to do something. While you
were in Word, the Eclipsys session you were in “timed out” and went into suspension. Under certain
circumstances when you are working in another application, the suspended icon is hidden in the background.
Notice in the screenshot to the left that you don’t see the traffic light in the lower left-hand corner.
In order to find the suspended session, you must minimize all the other applications.
Now that all the other applications have been minimized, the suspended session is now viewable.

Now, suppose more than one person is using Eclipsys on the same computer and both sessions are in
suspension. How do you know which session is yours? Notice to the right of the traffic light there is a
surname. That is the surname of the user who “owns” that session. Just look for the session with your surname
on the icon and restore that. Don’t worry, if you choose the wrong suspended session, the system will recognize
that the password is not the correct one for that session and will not let you log in.
